Who We Are

Steve has been a composite boat builder for almost three decades. Before coming to the United States as a young man, Steve learned traditional West Indian carving and woodworking techniques from his uncle and worked as a cabinetmaker. Finding that the demand for hand built custom furniture was limited in rural Downeast Maine, he took a job building fiberglass lobster boats. There he began to develop a new-found affinity for crafting with composites, appreciating the capacity of the materials to create boats with unparalleled strength and unlimited engineering innovation. Steve soon took a managing position with renown Hinckley Yachts, building the iconic Picnic Boats and learning the latest advancements in the high-tech field of resin infusion processes. After a decade in Maine, Steve made the move to Rhode Island to join the elite rank of composite builders at New England Boatworks. There, he worked on projects for world-class racing teams such as Puma and Bella Mente, gaining expertise in cutting-edge fabrication methods such as VARTM (vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding) using carbon fiber and complex resins. After a fifteen-year tenure at NEB, Steve decided it was time to head south and put his wealth of knowledge to broader use, and in 2019 he founded Craftsmen Custom Composites. The Company is a family business-his wife Kendall manages operations and son Caelan is a member of the talented, dedicated and energetic crew who all take great pride in their work.
